C.E./PMW P3 Gearbox 20th August, 1936. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. For the attention of Exptl. Dept. Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter of the 19th instant, I am afraid we have no special scheme for preventing gearbox dog clutches from disengaging. The point I mentioned to Captain Eyston was the advisability of having as long a spline as possible on the sliding gear so as to prevent any wobble action, also that we had proved the desirability of extending the splines under the dog clutches. The attached drawing of a third speed gear I think will indicate my point, i.e. with the extended portion, marked in red, the dogs will keep in engagement, but if this were removed they would disengage. I presume you are quite conversant with such methods. Yours faithfully, FOR THE ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT COMPANY LTD. G.J.RACKHAM. CHIEF ENGINEER.
