48420 WD{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}'S DEPARTMENT. (Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} is absent.) Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Msl/P.28.6.26. RE FRONT AXLE G.74860.F. - late G.74268. In accordance with your (Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}'s) instructions, I visited Vickers on Saturday last, 26th instant and had an interview with Mr Bruce, pointing out the alterations we required to the dies and also the importance of letting us have three forgings very quickly. He informed me that so far as the Drop Forge plant was concerned that would not start up before Wednesday, 30th instant, on account of shortage of coal. I pointed out to him the seriousness of any delay in supplying the three forgings we required, and we had a consultation with Mr Alexander Williamson, who gave me his assurance that the dies would be in the hammers on Wednesday next, 30th inst., and that the forgings would be put into operation immediately the die shop commenced work and that we should have the forgings on Friday or Saturday next, the 2nd or 3rd instant - provided of course nothing unforeseen occurred. I afterwards went into the die sinking shop and had a conversation with Mr Wesley, who is in charge of the Department, and had his assurance that the work would be put in hand immediately and the dies would be ready for Wednesday, 30th inst., in fact before I left the dies were put on the trestles ready for marking out. I informed Mr Bruce that we could arrange to collect the three forgings and that they should ring us up towards the end of the week stating the position. Ms.W NOTE:- Will Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} please say whether three forgings will be sufficient, as the expense of having to set up dies for this small quantity is very costly, as there are two sets of dies in addition to the trimming tools.
