PHANTOM III. REAR AXLE BRAKES & HUBS.

With reference to memo H.S.1/VS.{J. Vickers}13.1.37. there are one or two comments we should like to make on the items you recommend should be changed:-

Item 1.
The foot brake straps now used weigh 22 lbs. as against some 16 lbs. on Ph.II. and your proposals would raise this weight to nearly 35 lbs. This seems to us an extravagant way of saving money, as after two or three years of such changes the chassis weight rises 2 or 3 cwt. and drastic action is necessary to get it down again.

This may not matter very much but as it is probable that in a year's time we may standardize aluminium shoes on the front and possibly on the rear also, the die costs may be rather heavy.

Item 2.
We agree with this, we think it is now being done.

Item 3.
Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} will remember that we had trouble on Ph.III. front brakes due to Bijur oil lodging on the external edge of the inner carrier plate, then penetrating the joint which at that time was only bolted together and getting onto the front brakes. Now we have to stick inner to outer carrier plate with "Heldite", if you prefer "Heldite" to solder in this case, will you please build up some chassis like this, but we do not agree with rivetting only.

Item 4.
The remarks made in paragraph (1) apply here, but we agree to the omission of these holes.

Item 5.
We will agree to this if you will build up a set of brakes this way.

Item 6.
We agree to this.
