To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to BJ. x7430 DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}12/M7.4.27½ STEERING GENERAL. X.7430 X.5430 X.8430 With reference to the proposed returning spring on the worm tube, we have suggested to R.{Sir Henry Royce} that he should allow us to rig up temporarily an apparatus from which we could expect to learn something about this spring, and send herewith N.sch.2394 shewing what we propose. We quite appreciate that it cannot be standardised but we think perhaps you may like to make it experimentally. To give a spring without a set-up in the centre seems to be comparatively easy somewhat as shewn on N.sch.2313, but when we try to provide set-up, (and this seems to us to be rather necessary) the whole apparatus becomes much more complicated.
