PRICE'S SPECIAL GEAR COMPOUND

"Referring to your favour of the 3rd instant, our Chemists have now completed their examination of the three samples of used Special Gear Compound which by arrangement were sent us for this purpose.

in
"They find/each case no material difference in the proportion of water, but on the other hand there is an increase in the viscosity. This, however, as far as our Chemists can ascertain arises from a very fine separation of tarry matter, so that in all likelihood the viscosity tests are probably influenced by this material in fine suspension.

"The fact that no increase in moisture content is shewn has already been explained by the fact that there was consider-able development of heat from the gears which would drive off almost wholly any water present.

"Our Chemists have heated a portion of the Special Gear Compound to 250°F for two hours, and used sufficient air to keep it under good agitation, but under these conditions the increase in viscosity is less than 5% and the separation is extremely small an amount. On this account it is a little difficult to understand the separation of tarry matter which has occurred in the case of the three used oils, samples of which you sent us.

"Our Chemists have examined whitmore's Compound under identical conditions, that is as far as temperature and oxydation with air is concerned, and find that there is much larger separation of tarry matter with this than with our Special Gear Compound. We have carried out a number of tests, all of which shew that in these characteristics our Special Gear Compound is better then Whitmore's.
