R.R. 493a (50m) (D.B. 175 25-9-24) J.H.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. Expl. No. X8770 REF: Hal/LG30.1.25. S E C R E T. 44-PK CAR. To RJ. from Hss c. to CJ. PN.{Mr Northey} c. to CWB. HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} The parts we should like Sales to criticise on this car are :- 1. The exhaust system and cut-out. This is now the final EAC. design. The exhaust certainly makes more noise than the standard 40/50. It may however be considered sufficiently good for the first cars. It will be noted that the lever operating the cut-out works the opposite way to the one on the standard 40/50. The advantages of the new cut-out are :- (a) There is no slot in the floorboards for the operating mechanism. (b) The cutout is at the rear end of the silencer so that there is less chance of fumes getting into the body. (2) Controls. We have modified the shutter control and starter carbur-etter control according to the instructions left by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} when they were at Derby. We are still not very pleased with the arrangement. It will mean fresh designs to make any further definite improvement. As the shutter control is fitted on to the car after the body is fitted, it would appear that there is time for R.{Sir Henry Royce} to criticise this when the car goes down there, and instruct what alterations ought to be made. (3) Reduced clutch pedal pressure. Although we fitted this up on the car, we were in trouble with clearances and therefore we have put back the original pedals. This matter is being gone into. (4) Modified throttle governor. This has been improved. It still behaves very differently to the 40/50 HP. but the design does not allow that it ever will work in the same way. If this is considered unsatisfactory, we should like to have your remarks on the particular fault. (5) We consider that the car is a better car fitted with the 15-tooth axle than it was with the 14-tooth axle. contd :- | ||
