To R.H.C. HB{C. E. Harcombe}/FJH{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}, 2/KW. 6.9.35. SpectreCodename for Phantom III & 20/25 HP. Steering. We shall soon have a large number of modifications available for trial on the Marles steering of the SpectreCodename for Phantom III and 25 HP., and it is important that we should be able to decide as soon as possible the best combination of these modifications. We think that the quickest way of arriving at a decision will be to test the various modifications on 21-G-IV while in France. We have, altogether, about 7 arrangements of the gear which we wish to try, and as it would be impracticable to send out 7 complete steering gears we suggest that we should send out two gears so that G.W.H. can change the internal pieces of one while the other is being tested on the car. The adjustment and setting of the various arrangements of the gears could be determined at the Works so that the work necessary in France would merely consist of changing the internal parts. It is, of course, essential that we should get the necessary pieces together as soon as possible and accordingly we are going to make sure that Adamants supply their parts quickly. The required arrangements of the two steerings, which must be of F.{Mr Friese} type to suit 21-G-IV and should have the extra bolt to N. Sch. 4563 and oil retaining gland to N. Sch. 4579, are as follows :- Gear No. 1. (a) Built up with 0.800" lead cam with 0.002" crowning, standard bearings, roller to F.87552 with standard bearings. (b) Built up with 0.800" lead cam F.60994 with 0.002" crowning, and Timken bearings on its own steering tube. Roller F.87756 with Timken bearings. (c) Built up with the same cam and roller as (b) but with rockershaft to F.60992 modified to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2071, and needle bearing race to F.87381, 0.775" long instead of 0.824" long. | ||
