Piston ring knocks on pre-war chassis and the compatibility of pre-war pistons with post-war rings.

With reference to your Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}/NRC{N. R. Chandler}1/D4.9.23, I cannot see any harm in using the pre-war type cast-iron pistons with the present type piston rings, so long as the pre-war clearances are given to the pistons and the post-war clearances given to the piston rings. At the same time, I feel that the question of whether these should be used when not standardised, is a point which BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} should decide.
