| BX/NS.{Norman Scott} c. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} # 1039 Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/G.23.11.38. FRONT APRON AND BUMPER. B.38. R.{Sir Henry Royce} DODD PD.314. PD.314 attached shows the front apron and bumper for B.38. The apron is in general similar to that of PD.255 but differs in the vee angle of the front and in the position of the hole for the starting handle bracket. A valence is shown attached to the front of the apron, and is attached in the same way as the Wraith apron by bolts. The starting handle bearing and bracket are exactly as PD.307, but since the radiator is further forward there is not the choice of two brackets for the centre lamp. The forward position of the radiator as compared with B.V. also means that the 'cuckoo trap' for the starting handle must be higher up on the radiator and more packing will be required under it than for B.V. This is indicated on the drawing. The bumper, as originally drawn, was of the same length as shown on F.CD.749, but if the B.V. bumper is shortened then this bumper should also be shortened as shown by the dotted line. The bumper framework would then also be modified slightly, but this has not been shown. The same frame extension as on PD.307 has been shown, but the bumper bracket is further back on it.
