Mr. Hives. AMERICAN SCHEME FOR OILING CLUTCH SPIGOT. To do away with valve on crankshaft. Test 1. Clutch dismantled, cleaned and wiped perfectly dry - oil valve on spigot end taken out, end of shaft plugged up. Clutch built up and half a syringeful of oil put in. Engine run at 1000 revs. clutch disengaged every 1/4 min. - test lasting 2 hours (Clutch disengaged 250 times) Result of test. Clutch spigot perfectly dry and was slightly coloured through heat. Test 2. Clutch cleaned as previous test - half a syringeful of oil put in. Engine run at 1000 revs. clutch disengaged for 5 mins, and then engine shut down for 5 mins. - test 2 hrs. - half a syringeful of oil was added after 40 mins. run. Result of test. Spigot dry. Test 3. Same as previous test but 2 syringefuls of oil in clutch. Result of test. Spigot dry. Test 4. Same as previous test but with 3 syringefuls of oil in clutch. Result. Spigot dry. Test 5. Oil baffle fitted over thrust race to prevent oil from being thrown off. 2 syringefuls of oil in clutch - 2 hrs. run as previous test. Baffle collected oil but did not lead it to spigot. Test 6. Inside of ball cage turned to a point [diagram of a pointed baffle] baffle fitted Result as above. Test 7. Ball cage with grooves cut diagonally to allow oil to run down. Baffle fitted - 2 syringefuls of oil put in clutch but fed in from top. Result. Good film of oil on clutch spigot. contd:- | ||
