INDEPENDENT AIR VENT PIPES - PETROL TANK.

With reference to the complaints raised in FH.1/WTA.9.33. relating to chassis 20-MY and GKM-32,

(1) This modification was carried out without the knowledge or consent of the Experimental Dept; we were unaware that it existed.

(2) We do not think that the venting of the tank is responsible for the complaint of petrol fumes in the body; we should imagine the cause is due to petrol splashing out of the filler cap. This has been modified recently to prevent this occurring.

(3) The job if proved necessary is badly carried out, the vent pipe is very much too small to permit of quick filling it should be the same size as the vent pipe which it replaced viz: .625" dia.

It should be noted that on the Bentley car all petrol fillers will be built into the body and no special venting arrangement has been provided. We have heard no criticisms about petrol fumes in any of our experimental cars.

It would be interesting to know, if on GKM-32 it is noticeable that petrol fumes are noticeable inside the body now that the vent pipe has been disconnected.
