LID{A. J. Lidsey} X1140. See me T/S. To Ex. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} E.8/HP.20.7.33. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. Sr. Ior. FN. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} NH. re 40/50 HP. Bonnet Panel Stops. Replying to your memo Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager}4/KW.20.7.33, this job has been somewhat held up because most of our experimental 40/50 chassis are out of date, and not fitted with modern type long bonnets. We have, however, now arranged to put some of these stops on 22-EX, and also on Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s car when it is up here next week. In the meantime we are sending you under separate cover, a rough working model of the device we propose to use. You will notice that it consists of two arms, one being extensible, fixed to the upper bonnet panels by special headed bolts. These bolt heads can be painted or plated as desired, and can be detached for the purpose of finishing the bonnet. With these tongs as arranged the bonnet does not go so far over when opened as at present, and in consequence it does not overpower the operator with its weight and thump on to the stops. Conversely when it is required to close the bonnet the effort called for is not excessive. On the other hand the bonnet has to be sufficiently far over when opened to avoid being blown back by a breeze. The tongs have extensions on them for keeping the bonnet side clear of the dash. When detaching the bonnet from the chassis the tongs can be unmeshed sideways and the extensible hooks when slid back as far as possible will leave enough gap for passing the radiator anchorage tube. Washleather or some such protection should be put between the top panels of the bonnet during the operation of lifting off. We have avoided the use of special stops for this latter purpose so as to limit the number of excresences on the top panels to the fixing bolts already mentioned. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
