9. Magneto Ignition.

PN.{Mr Northey} said he would like to raise the question of Magneto Ignition and to have the matter discussed particularly from the point of view as to whether or not it was a wise thing to delete the magneto from the Rolls-Royce chassis.

C. and PN.{Mr Northey} both expressed the opinion that the stand-by magneto ignition has a sales value and both appeared rather reluctant to delete it unless there is some strong technical reason for doing so.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} said he was of the opinion that magneto ignition was no longer necessary and in fact on the newer designs which he has in hand no provision is being made for magneto ignition, neither the SpectreCodename for Phantom III nor J.III will have magneto as there is no room for such a fitment. In view of the reliability of the present coil ignition he did not see any necessity for retaining the magneto.

10. Slipping Clutches.

PN.{Mr Northey} mentioned the constantly recurring trouble which is being experienced at Service Stations due to slipping clutches on the 20/25. He said that the alteration to the form of splines which has recently been made has been rather disappointing in results and has not cured the trouble.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} said that in the investigations which had been and are still being made by the Experimental Dept. into this trouble one outstanding feature is that all the faulty clutches which have been examined had oil sodden fabrics and they are inclined to believe that the slipping trouble is due to oil leaking into the clutch. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} said that the fabric which is being used on the Bentley clutch is less hygroscopic and may be more satisfactory in use. He said that the Expt. Dept. are still working on this problem.

11. Popping in Exhaust..

PN.{Mr Northey} said H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} reports that popping in the exhaust appears to be getting worse on 20/25.
E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} said that the new design of expanding carburetter which is now fitted on F.II. removes this objection and the design will ultimately be applied to the 20/25.
This improvement is attributed to throttle edge carburation.
