RE FINISH TO INSTRUMENTS. X 3424

I am afraid that it is likely that we shall have to be satisfied with the finish of the samples you sent, and which I return herewith. I agree that the surface is not excellent, but generally this finish will, I think look well. The chief objection to the blemishes to which you refer is that the enamel is likely to start coming off at these places, and this appears already to have occurred. On the whole the surface appears to me to be reasonably permanent, also although the surface is more highly polished than the Weston instrument finish yet you will remember that the Weston Finish becomes brighter and approximates to these after a little use. I think we should proceed with this finish pressing Elliotts to improve slightly their workmanship.
