With reference to the attached correspondence in connection with the above.

EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} has demonstrated the fault complained of on the above car. Our first comment when we were shewn this fault was that we could not believe that what we were shewn was what the customer was complaining about because it appeared to be quite a trivial fault. We were assured however by EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} and Mr. Trayner of the R.D. that the customer was complaining of this fault which they demonstrated.

The noise which is complained of appears to be due to the fact that when the clutch is engaged the trans-mission winds up especially when the car is being accelerated. If then the clutch is quickly depressed, the transmission unwinds, and being an undamped spring drive it oscillates causing a noise which might be caused from slack in the top gear, or slack in the side shaft or in the gears.

We know of no means of overcoming this fault on the existing cars.

To prevent it occurring entirely would mean an alteration in the design which would have to be carried out by WW.

Our own recommendation is that a <del>technical</del> official should visit this customer first to make sure that the complaint we are discussing is the one which the customer is complaining of, and if so, to explain to the customer the cause of the noise.

We do not think for one minute that we shall get R.{Sir Henry Royce} to treat it as a serious complaint.
