REPORT ON TRIPLEX GLASS. X.673

This glass is for use in windscreens and windows of covered cars. It costs several times as much as ordinary plate glass and consists of two thin sheets of glass with a sheet of celluloid between them. The sheets are pressed and sealed together.
We have had a sheet lying in the open air for about a year and it is now quite yellow and hopelessly unfit for use. A second piece has been in one half of the screen of a covered experimental car for six months, this piece is turning yellow and is not nearly so clear as ordinary glass.
Another defect is that if one looks through it at an angle it distorts the vision something like a piece of common window glass does. This is apparently due to the irregular surface of the celluloid sheet.
The only advantage it appears to possess is that it does not splinter and fly if broken, this does not nearly balance the disadvantages and increased cost.
I recommend that we do not use any more of this glass as it is decidedly worse than the usual plate glass.
