SMITH MOTOR TYPE ELECTRIC CLOCKS.

In order to get an idea of the progress of the new type of electric clock, and whether it is likely to be suitable for standardisation, we have reviewed the position to date, and summarised it below -

Generally as reported earlier in Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R. Childs}9/JH.7.4.38. this type of clock is considered suitable for the car, the only point in doubt being the reliability of a certain light wiping contact, included in the construction. It is to test this point out, and to get experience of them generally, that we are anxious to get as much running, on as large a number of clocks as possible.

Up to the present, nine clocks have been received and have performed as follows -

No.1 This unit failed to start again, at the end of the bench preliminary tests, reported in Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R. Childs}9/JH.7.4.38. and was returned to the Makers for overhaul. On return it was put through a bench starting and stopping test. This consisted of continuous running, punctuated by two starts (one in the morning, and one in the afternoon) and two corresponding stops. In this manner it successfully completed 58 starts, covering a period of 3 1/2 days running. It was then fitted on B.56.BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} on which it has run 596 miles. It stopped once, and required a few attempts to restart it.

No.2. This passed bench preliminary tests without trouble. Was then fitted on B.56.BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} and ran 1,433 miles. Then removed for bench starting tests, completed 12 starts without missing, when it was fitted on 28.G.VI, on this car has run 2,290 miles.

No.3. Fitted on 7.B.V. and has run 5,838 miles.

No.4. " " 27.G.VI " " 5,630
