The increase in weight of an aero type blower was fitted, calculated on a prorata basis from the Kestrel VI and Merlin II engine weights and capacities would be, approximately 40 lbs. Allowing an increase of 10% on this weight because of the fact that the blower weight would not decrease proportionately to the engine c.c., we get 44 lbs as the weight of the blower unit (which includes carburetter and slipper drive.) The blower without the carburetter would weigh about 34 lbs.

Therefore, the complete weight of the lightened P.III with blower would be 640 lbs 7 ozs.

The weights of the Merlin II and Kestrel VI engines are given below:-

Merlin II.

Engine weight 1335 lbs.
Blower " 120 "
Carburetter wt. 13.75 "
Engine c.c. = 27,040 "

Kestrel VI.

Engine weight 970 "
Blower " 69 "
Carburetter weight 16.5"
Engine c.c. 21,254"
